The India Story Review: Strong Premise Can't Overcome Weak Screenplay

The India Story is a courtroom drama directed by Chettan D K that deals with the critical problem of contamination caused by pesticides and its consequences for human life. Shreyas Talpade and Kajal Aggarwal star in this movie where a family drama tries to find itself within the framework of legal proceedings against some multinational companies. The subject of the movie is very topical and interesting; however, the director is unable to use it to create a good courtroom drama. Good actors and an important social message cannot save the movie from poor script writing and an inconsistent plot.

He gets help from an ambitious and brave lawyer Archana (Kajal Aggarwal). As the story unravels, through the course of the investigation, some chilling facts come to light. The rest of the story revolves around justice and accountability.

Without question, the most important strength of The India Story lies in the choice of topic. The film draws attention to a current problem in reality that needs to be addressed; thus, it can be considered both relevant and meaningful. However, the screenplay does not seem to match the importance of its topic. Courtroom scenes are not very intense for such a type of film, and some emotional scenes lack depth. Rather than creating a tension due to legal disputes, the plot becomes rather boring and predictable. The first half of the movie takes much time explaining the problem, while the second half turns out to be much better because of the emotional component. Nevertheless, the plotline still varies greatly.

Shreyas Talpade Delivers a Sincere Performance

Shreyas Talpade provides an emotionally moving portrayal of a grief-stricken man, driven to achieve justice. The actor manages to maintain the sincerity of his emotions and holds the audience's attention despite weak screenplay. Kajal Aggarwal portrays an emotionally stable lawyer, who is taking part in a battle of wits in the court, whereas Murli Sharma and Manish Wadhwa provide reliable back-up. However, despite the sincere acting by all the participants of the film, the characters suffer from poor writing and a lack of drama.

Music and Technical Aspects

The movie uses a realistic camera work that fits well into the realism of its theme. The camerawork by Nishant Bhagwat does not impress, although the production design manages to keep the realism of the courtroom and investigation scenes intact. The background music compliments the dramatic parts of the movie but fails to create an impression. The songs are also of no much effect. Editing is good, although the script could be improved.

Shreyas Talpade and Kajal Aggarwal deliver convincing acting, but still fail to compensate for the poor screenwriting and typical courtroom procedures that take place in the movie.
