Karavali Movie Review: A Beautiful Coastal Mystery That Feels Incomplete

"Karavali" is a coastal drama movie in the language of Kannada, directed by Gurudatha Ganiga and features Prajwal Devaraj, Mithra, Raj B Shetty, and Ramesh Indira as main actors. The release date of this film was July 18, 2026, and the plot revolves around the themes of mystery, family heritage, friendship, and the sports of Kambala. Although this film is visually appealing and has an ambitious storyline, it is not successful in connecting all its exciting concepts.

The narrative is about Dhananjaya (Prajwal Devaraj), a cattle breeder who is known to have a unique bond with animals. Dhananjaya's life takes an entirely new dimension with the disappearance of his dear cow named Bhoomi, named after his deceased mother. In search of his cow, Dhananjaya ventures into the coastal area of Karnataka named Karavali where he gets entangled into the local cultural event named Kambala which is a traditional buffalo race. Dhananjaya, with his special abilities to soothe the Mahabala's (Mithra) buffaloes, makes them victorious after a long gap of three decades.

However, with this victory comes the challenge for Dhananjaya when he has to face the wrath of the influential landlord of the place, Doddavru (Ramesh Indira), who has been ruling over the Kambala for a long time. In addition, the present story also relates to the legend of the great Kambala race, Mahaveera (Raj B Shetty). The main conflict is about pride, legacy, friendship and the fight over the family legacy.

Karavali Review: Big Ideas, Uneven Execution

‘Karavali’ should be appreciated for its bold attempt. The movie uses Kambala and culture of the coastline of Karnataka as a setting for a mysterious, competitive, and generational conflict. The idea is interesting indeed, and there were a few scenes which made me curious. The movie also has an excellent atmosphere.

But the screenplay fails to deliver. The plot develops too fast, and there are a few emotional arcs that are not properly developed. There are several main characters in the movie, but there is no clear emotional center. Also, the runtime interferes with the plot development. Some key developments happen too quickly, and some emotional scenes are not developed long enough.

Mithra Steals the Show

Another important point to make regarding ‘Karavali’ is Mithra who is a prominent actor and famous for playing comic roles. This time he is presented with a multifaceted and emotional character and he copes with the challenge well. Raj B Shetty plays Mahaveera with great intensity and gravity; however, this character lacks depth to become the legendary hero he is. Ramesh Indira proves his skills at the antagonist’s part. The supporting actors do what they can with their small screen presence, but despite their efforts, Prajwal Devaraj is not provided with a profound emotional role in the screenplay.

Music and Visual Appeal

From a technical standpoint, the 'Karavali' is one of the best features of this movie. The cinematography of Abhimanyu Sadanandan manages to capture the beauty of the coastal terrain in its entirety. The background score of Sachin Basrur also plays an active role in adding vitality to the film, along with maintaining the suspense in many scenes. There are some creative transitions used in the film along with voice-overs and multiple perspectives. While some of these elements work effectively for the film, the constant experimenting gets slightly annoying after a while. The editing is somewhat inconsistent at times.

‘Karavali’ is definitely an interesting movie, which has a great concept and a unique cultural setting. The coastal location, Kambala scenes, and unique storyline offer a few memorable scenes. Unfortunately, ‘Karavali’ is an unfinished movie since its screenplay lacks a good character development. There are plenty of interesting concepts presented in the movie, but not all of them have been developed. Despite this, the cast, visual effects, and background music make this movie worth watching for Kannada movie lovers.
