Secret Soldier Movie Review: Weak Writing Undermines Its Spy Thriller Premise

Secret Soldier is a Telugu action thriller directed and produced by Akki Viswanadha Reddy, starring Nihal Kodhaty and Surya Srinivas in the lead roles. The film, which was earlier titled China Piece, finally arrived in theatres on September 18, 2026, after a long delay and a title change following a censor objection.

The film has an interesting premise involving patriotism, friendship, espionage and a missing secret code. However, weak narration and an unconvincing spy setup prevent Secret Soldier from becoming the engaging thriller it could have been.

Meera Vali (Nihal Kodhaty) is a young man from Nellore who dreams of joining the Army and serving the country. His patriotism eventually gives him an opportunity to work as a secret agent and become part of a dangerous mission. Things take a complicated turn when a secret code goes missing during a rocket launch. Chief Param (Kamal Kamaraju) begins investigating Vali and discovers his connection to Prudhvi (Surya Srinivas), Vali's close friend. Prudhvi is subsequently taken into custody as the investigation deepens.

The story then raises several questions about Vali's actual role, the people he works for and the mysterious Bhakthal (Vamsi Nekkanti). Agents Sarah (Harshitha Bandlamuri), Sheethal (Sireesha Nulu) and Kanika Kapoor (Deeksha Panth) also become part of the increasingly complicated mission. The rest of the story explores Vali's secret identity, the missing code and the conspiracy surrounding the mission.

Secret Soldier Review: An Interesting Idea Lost In Weak Execution

The basic idea behind Secret Soldier is certainly interesting. A young patriot becoming a secret agent and then finding himself under suspicion could have formed the foundation for a tense espionage thriller. Unfortunately, the screenplay does not make the most of this premise.

The biggest problem is the first half. Instead of moving quickly into the spy mission, the film spends a considerable amount of time establishing the friendship between Vali and Prudhvi. Their bond is important to the story, but the friendship track is stretched so much that the actual thriller takes too long to begin.

Some of the spy-related scenes are also difficult to take seriously. The film takes several cinematic liberties with how RAW and other agencies function, while certain sequences involving suspected terrorists and secret identities come across as silly rather than suspenseful.

The second half is somewhat better and brings more of the actual mystery into focus. However, too many characters and twists are introduced, making the narrative confusing at times. The screenplay needed tighter writing and considerably more research to make the espionage elements convincing.

Nihal Kodhaty and Surya Srinivas Lead the Cast

Nihal Kodhaty does well as Meera Vali. He brings sincerity to a character who is caught between his patriotic ambitions and the suspicion surrounding him. His performance gives the protagonist some much-needed emotional weight. Surya Srinivas, however, is one of the film's highlights. His Nellore accent and punch dialogues provide some humour, particularly during the first half.

His chemistry with Nihal also makes their friendship one of the more watchable parts of the movie. Harshitha Bandlamuri and Sireesha Nulu are convincing in their roles as agents, while Vamsi Nekkanti makes an impression as Bhakthal. Kamal Kamaraju also looks effective as Param. Senior actors Tulasi and Raghu Babu, however, are given little material to work with.

Music and Visual Appeal

The technical department does provide a few positives. Suresh Ragutu's cinematography gives Secret Soldier a relatively rich visual appearance, helping the film look bigger than its modest premise might suggest. The action sequences are also comparatively realistic and restrained. Karthik Rodriguez's background score adds some intensity to the proceedings and helps elevate a few of the more serious moments. These technical strengths, however, cannot completely overcome the screenplay's problems.

Final Verdict

Secret Soldier has the foundation for a decent spy thriller, but the execution repeatedly gets in its own way. The friendship between Vali and Prudhvi provides some emotional value, while Nihal Kodhaty and Surya Srinivas deliver committed performances.

Unfortunately, the weak narration, stretched first half, illogical spy elements and excessive cinematic liberties make the film feel less convincing than its premise suggests. The second half offers a few interesting moments, but they arrive too late to completely rescue the experience.
