L&O : Law and Order is a Malayalam action-crime drama directed by Ranjith and written by Udaykrishna, with Prakash Varma in the lead and Mammootty making a special appearance as Karikkamuri Shanmughan, his iconic character from Ranjith's 2004 film Black. The film released in theatres on September 18, 2026, after multiple postponements.
The film follows a police officer and a group of young recruits as they take on a drug network in Kochi. While the premise has the ingredients for a mass cop entertainer, L&O : Law and Order struggles because of dated writing, weak staging and an underwhelming use of Mammootty's much-anticipated character.

Law and Order Story Overview
DYSP Balagopal (Prakash Varma) is a police officer dealing with personal tragedy after losing his son to a drug empire. He is joined by four young recruits as they take on Pacha (Shersha Sherief), a ruthless drug lord whose criminal network has a strong grip on Kochi. The five officers form the core of the film, with their friendship and loyalty becoming an important part of the narrative.
Balagopal must balance his personal pain with his responsibility as a police officer while going after Pacha and his associates. The situation becomes more significant when Karikkamuri Shanmughan (Mammootty), the character from Black, returns to the story. The rest of the film focuses on the clash between the police team and the criminal network, leading towards a final confrontation.

Law and Order Review: A Dated Cop Drama That Misses Its Mark
The basic premise of L&O : Law and Order is straightforward and familiar. It has a grieving police officer, young recruits, a drug lord and a criminal underworld. The problem is that the screenplay rarely finds a fresh way to bring these elements together. The Indian Express criticised the film's writing, visuals, action and overall execution, while Cinema Express described it as a dated cop saga that often becomes unintentionally funny.
The five young cops are written with the kind of friendship and camaraderie associated with Malayalam campus films from the 2000s. That dynamic could have worked with a more contemporary screenplay, but here it often makes the film feel stuck in another era. The film also attempts to address substance abuse and the criminal ecosystem surrounding drugs. However, the social angle gets buried under familiar revenge drama, gang rivalries and police-versus-criminal confrontations.

Prakash Varma and Mammootty's Performances
Prakash Varma gets the central role as Balagopal, following his much-noticed appearance as a police officer in Thudarum. Here, he plays a more vulnerable character dealing with grief while continuing his fight against crime. His performance gives the film some emotional grounding. The supporting ensemble includes Abhirami, Shankar Ramakrishnan, Gayathri Ashokan, Anand Manmadhan, Devan, Joy Mathew and several other actors. Some members of the cast make an impression despite limited material.
Mammootty's appearance as Karikkamuri Shanmughan is naturally one of the film's biggest talking points. The character originally appeared in Black, also directed by Ranjith. However, the Indian Express review argues that the return does little justice to the character's legacy, making the much-hyped cameo feel wasted.

WW gross wont be more than 10L💥

Music and Visual Appeal
The technical execution is another weak point. Prashanth Raveendran handles the cinematography, but the Indian Express review criticised the visuals as amateurish and felt they lacked the atmospheric quality that cinematographer Amal Neerad brought to Black.
The background score by Bijibal and songs by Joe Daniel also received criticism from the Indian Express review. The recreation of Black's “Ambalakkara” is particularly questioned, as it fails to recreate the impact of the original. The action follows familiar mass-film conventions, with repeated fight beats and predictable destruction rather than sequences that add something distinctive to the cop drama.
What Are The Weak Points?
- Dated screenplay
- Weak visual execution
- Underwhelming cameo
- Predictable action
Is L&O : Law and Order Worth Watching?
Watch it if you:
- Are a Mammootty fan
- Follow Malayalam cinema
- Enjoy cop dramas
- Want to see Shanmughan return
Skip it if you:
- Expect Black nostalgia
- Want fresh storytelling
- Prefer realistic cop films
- Dislike dated action dramas

Final Verdict
L&O : Law and Order has an interesting foundation, particularly with Prakash Varma's police officer, the five-recruit setup and the return of Mammootty's Karikkamuri Shanmughan. Unfortunately, the film's dated writing and uneven execution prevent those elements from coming together effectively.
The much-anticipated Mammootty cameo is unlikely to satisfy viewers expecting the impact of Black, while the action and technical aspects add little freshness. Despite its committed lead performance and relevant subject, Law and Order ultimately struggles to deliver the mass cop thriller it sets out to be. ([The Indian Express][2])
