In a departure from Matt Johnson’s customary satire-filled narrative style, he directs Tony – a coming of age biographical movie that tells the story of the early years of Anthony Bourdain. Tony Story Overview
The plot revolves around Anthony "Tony" Bourdain, a 19-year-old student, who aspires to be a writer someday. After being denied admission into a coveted writing fellowship program, he abruptly moves to Provincetown in the hopes that everything will turn out okay. He does this after impulsively deciding to follow his girlfriend Nancy (Emilia Jones).
Despite having no money and being unprepared for this venture, Tony manages to get hired as a dishwasher at a local restaurant owned by a chef (Antonio Banderas). As he settles into the frenetic pace of working in a professional kitchen, he develops a love for cooking and learns to overcome his immaturity, insecurities, and rash decision-making skills. The rest of the story focuses on ambition, identity and life experiences that will form Tony's character for the world to see.

Tony Review: Honest, Warm and Beautifully Grounded
In place of lionizing the famous Anthony Bourdain, Tony depicts him as an unrefined young man trying to discover himself. This down-to-earth attitude constitutes the main strength of the film because it is not concerned with constructing a myth – it simply tells the truth about his growth.
The writer, Matt Johnson, sticks to the idea that makes the film's narrative personal. Ordinary conversations, work in the kitchen and failures are what define Tony in the movie. The script combines humor, vulnerability, and emotion without adding any unnecessary tension.
The pace of the film is slow because it allows the viewers to know its characters. Though some people might think that the film should have included many other details from Tony's life, it works because it is not a biopic, but an episode in his life.
Dominic Sessa Delivers a Career-Best Performance
Dominic Sessa is a great actor who portrays Tony Bourdain when he was young. Dominic is able to bring out the confidence, insecurities, and curious nature of Tony which makes the character believable. Antonio Banderas is a brilliant actor who plays the role of the mature chef who secretly shapes Tony's view on his life and cooking. Emilia Jones and Leo Woodall add their share of warmth and charisma respectively, each time they feature in the movie.

Music and Visual Appeal
The movie captures the essence of Provincetown during the 1970s very effectively through the use of beautiful cinematography and natural lighting. Additionally, the well-designed scenes set in the kitchen add to the realism of each scene. The soundtrack blends in very well with the nostalgic setting without dominating the narrative, while at the same time the editing ensures that there is room for emotional expression. Instead of complex filmmaking, Tony opts for simplicity.

Tony is an example of how one can make a single chapter in one's life more captivating than their whole biography. Matt Johnson provides a touching coming-of-age story about personal development rather than fame, and Dominic Sessa gives a brilliant performance in it.
