‘Last Man in Tower’ Review: A Sobering Middle-Class Tragedy Led by Bajpayee

"Last Man in Tower" is a Hindi drama directed by Ben Rekhi from the novel of the same title written by Aravind Adiga. Some of the actors who star in the film include Manoj Bajpayee, Divya Dutta, Boman Irani and Sukant Goel. The film was released on 11th September 2026. In the film, the characters are members of a Mumbai housing society who get into conflict over a redevelopment deal. Initially, the conflict begins between two people but soon becomes one of greed, isolation, morality and sacrifice.

The protagonist of the film, Yogesh Mishra, who is also popularly called Masterji (played by Manoj Bajpayee), is a retired school teacher residing in Vishram, an old housing colony located in Vakola, Mumbai. However, everything takes a different turn when Dharmen Shah (played by Boman Irani), the builder of the area approaches all residents and promises them lots of money if they vacate their houses as the builder intends to demolish the old colony and build a tower there. Most of the residents are pleased by the proposition, but not Masterji.

Instead, he chooses to remain loyal to his old house and this makes him fight against all the residents, his friends, as well as members of his own family. The character of Mrs. Puri (played by Divya Dutta) also has similar problems and this further increases the anger of Mrs. Puri towards Masterji's refusal to vacate his old house.

Last Man in Tower succeeds since it does not transform its conflict into a simplistic good versus evil narrative. Masterji does not come across as purely good, neither do the people wishing to sell their properties appear as greedy characters with no motive. The film recognizes why everyone wants economic stability and a better future. On the other hand, the ease with which community spirit breaks down when greed takes center stage in the quest for material gain is portrayed.

Things only get progressively worse as Masterji's relations unravel. There is also an intriguing political undertone in the film. The re-development plan creates conflicts among individuals who were living in harmony before. There is a connection drawn between the conflict and wider issues like capitalism and aspirations.

Manoj Bajpayee and Divya Dutta Deliver Strong Performances

The portrayal of Masterji by Manoj Bajpayee is brilliant. It reflects not only his belief in protecting his home and ideals but also reflects that he is stubborn because of personal reasons. As a result, Masterji looks like a real man and not a perfect character.

As good as Manoj Bajpayee is, Divya Dutta's role as Mrs. Puri is very much to the point too. Her character has its own problems and aspirations; as a result, the director allows her enough time to be more than just Masterji's opponent, his neighbor Boman Irani adds to the film with his character of Dharmen Shah in a restrained way, whereas Sukant Goel is outstanding in his role of Masterji's pragmatic son.

The movie is shot at locations in the real Mumbai and maintains a realistic visual approach to the film. The old housing colony comes to serve as an essential element of the film as it represents an old version of the city that seems to disappear.

The script written by Sooni Taraporevala concentrates on the people and the dynamics of their relations whereas the dialogue written by Juhi Chaturvedi gives realism to the characters.
