Dial 1975 Story Overview
This story is based during the period of Emergency and is all about a wireless telephone that can be used by a prominent politician to contact his associates without the prying eyes of the government officials. Govind (Kay Kay Menon) is a military man who was subjected to a court-martial during the 1962 war between Indo-China due to murder of his comrades. Govind is caught up in the quest of looking for the secret tape that has information regarding the deal made by a RAW agent, a German national and the wireless telephone.
Ram Avatar (Govind Pandey) is a science teacher who is secretly taping the conversations for an army officer named Thaper (Uday Chandra). When Govind gets to know about the existence of the tape and the amount of money, he murders Ram Avatar and sets out in search of both. Irish (Tom Alter) who is a jailer asks the prisoner Prakash (Pravessh Rana) to look for the lost tape but when he is freed, he realises that the mission is riskier than he expected.

Dial 1975 Review: Strong Premise, Weak Execution
Probably, the most advantageous aspect of Dial 1975 is the very concept of it. It is possible to say that a thriller about the Emergency, the central theme of which is the freedom to communicate, has everything to become a great political thriller. The first episodes are dynamic, and the background of the Emergency contributes to the creation of an atmosphere of anxiety and paranoia. Additionally, the production design helps create an atmosphere.
Unfortunately, the screenplay becomes out of control over time. The plot is overloaded with too many characters, subplots, and changes in motivation. At the same time, this happens without increasing the suspense. The transformation of Govind into a cold-blooded murderer is too abrupt and requires additional development of the character.
Kay Kay Menon Steals The Show
However, the only saving grace of the film continues to be Kay Kay Menon. Menon plays the role of Govind effectively and with the required sense of mystery and complexity, although his role lacks depth in the screenplay. Another good performance comes from Pravessh Rana in the role of Prakash. In fact, he manages to carry the second half of the film quite successfully. Kirti Kulhari does not have much to do, but Tom Alter, Uday Chandra and Govind Pandey contribute effectively in the supporting roles.

Technical Aspects and Visual Tone
It was natural for the Emergency setting to provide the film Dial 1975 with the tense visual ambiance. The set design was fairly good at representing the period, and assisted in building up the sense of doubt that surrounded the characters. Dial 1975 featured another creative device which is the narration of some scenes through the wireless phone. It is an innovative device, even though its irregular usage made it seem more like a storytelling device rather than anything else. The technical presentation is quite good overall, though some better editing and story-telling would do well in keeping up the tension.

Final Verdict
Though Dial 1975 features a great background and a very promising concept for the main plot line, it fails miserably in developing these ideas into a suspense movie. Indeed, the atmosphere of the Emergency makes the movie seem important; however, the secret telephone gives it its intrigue. Sadly enough, too many unnecessary subplots and undeveloped motivations obscure the central concept. Menon and Rana have made their best effort in keeping the movie interesting, yet the script has failed in allowing their talent to unfold fully.

Overall, Dial 1975 is a one-time watch for Kay Kay Menon fans, but its promising premise deserved a sharper and more suspenseful execution.
