Bollywood actress Preity Zinta has taken a strong legal stand against the unauthorized use of her identity in AI-generated content. The actress recently received permission from the Bombay High Court to proceed with legal action against tech giants Google, Meta, and several other platforms. The move comes amid growing concerns over the misuse of artificial intelligence to create fake videos, manipulated images, and misleading online content featuring celebrities.

According to reports, Justice Abhay Ahuja of the Bombay High Court accepted Preity Zinta’s plea seeking permission to initiate legal proceedings against the concerned platforms. In her petition, the actress has claimed violations of her personality rights, copyright, and moral rights.
Her legal representative, advocate Rohan Kadam, informed the court that AI-generated fake videos, edited photographs, misleading memes, and even unauthorized chatbots impersonating the actress have been circulating online. These materials, he argued, create a false representation of the actress and can significantly impact her reputation.
Concerns Over Global Reputation Damage
During the hearing, Preity Zinta’s legal team emphasized that although the actress spends time abroad, she remains an Indian citizen and continues to maintain strong professional ties with Mumbai. Therefore, any harm caused to her public image directly affects her professional and personal reputation in India.
The court was also informed that the disputed content is not limited to a specific region. Due to the global nature of the internet, the fake and manipulated material can be accessed worldwide, amplifying its impact. While the offices of some technology companies may be located outside the court's jurisdiction, the consequences of the online content are being felt in Mumbai as well, making the case relevant to the Bombay High Court.

After reviewing the submissions and examining the documents presented, the Bombay High Court concluded that Preity Zinta had made a valid case for seeking legal remedies. The court granted her permission under Clause XII of the Letters Patent, allowing the lawsuit to move forward.
