Producer Karan Johar’s renowned banner Dharma Productions is all set to expand its footprint beyond Hindi cinema and step into Malayalam films. Known for delivering iconic Bollywood blockbusters like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, the production house has recently been exploring new directions amid mixed performance at the box office in recent years.

Now, in a significant move, Dharma Productions has officially announced its entry into Malayalam cinema, marking a fresh and strategic collaboration in the South Indian film industry.

Collaboration with Prithviraj Productions

According to reports shared by film critic Taran Adarsh on his official social media handle, Dharma Productions has joined hands with actor-filmmaker Prithviraj Sukumaran’s production company, Prithviraj Productions.

This partnership is expected to bring together some of the most respected creative minds from both industries. The collaboration signals Dharma’s intent to actively participate in regional cinema, especially in Malayalam films, which have gained nationwide and global recognition for their strong storytelling and innovative filmmaking.

‘Odiyan: The Age of Illusion’ - The First Malayalam Project

The first project under this collaboration is titled Odiyan: The Age of Illusion. The film will also be developed in association with director Rahul Sadasivan, known for his unique storytelling style in the Malayalam industry.

The story of Odiyan is reportedly inspired by the folklore and cultural mythology of 19th-century Kerala. It draws from traditional legends surrounding the mysterious “Odiyan” figures-mythical shape-shifters believed to have existed in Kerala’s ancient rural folklore.

A Blend of Mythology and Cinema

The upcoming film is expected to explore deep-rooted cultural narratives while presenting them with a modern cinematic approach. By combining folklore, mystery, and psychological elements, Odiyan: The Age of Illusion aims to offer a fresh experience to audiences.

With this project, Dharma Productions is not only entering a new regional market but also embracing storytelling styles that Malayalam cinema is widely celebrated for.

A New Phase for Dharma Productions

This move marks an important milestone for Dharma Productions as it expands its creative boundaries beyond Bollywood. The collaboration with Prithviraj Productions and Malayalam filmmakers reflects the growing convergence of Indian film industries.

If successful, this partnership could open doors for more cross-industry collaborations in the future, strengthening the bridge between Hindi and South Indian cinema.
