As Siddharth delves into the history of his forefathers, he finds out that there is an intimate relationship between the mystery and the ancient tale of Goddess Varahi.

The plot unfolds in the context of royal history, religion, and mythology. Siddharth tries to find out how the preceding generations met their end and whether he can avoid the same destiny. The entire plot develops in light of the connection between the mystery of the family curse and the spiritual mystery of Goddess Varahi.

Mahendragiri Varahi Review: A Good Idea Held Back by Slow Writing

The biggest strength of this film lies in its core concept. A royal family afflicted by a 200-year-old curse makes for a great premise for a mystery thriller with mythological overtones. This film is also trying to build an aura of spirituality and mystique around the plot and not relying on a standard commercial action template.

Nevertheless, the screenplay is dragging towards what should be the best part of it. The first half focuses too much on the introduction of characters and mythology, while the main mystery moves too slowly. Tighter screenplay and editing could have improved this film considerably.

With the mystery unfolding, some of the suspense is becoming rather predictable. The supernatural elements are quite interesting; however, there is a problem with the balance between the mystery, emotion, and mythology that can be found in this film. It takes more than two and a half hours to tell its story.

Sumanth and Aishwarya Rajesh Deliver Measured Performances

The acting of Sumanth is quite controlled for the part of Siddharth. Rather than playing the part of an average protagonist in dealing with a supernatural force, he plays it quite reservedly and lets his curiosity and fears build up gradually.

The role of Varahi Maatha is quite impactful, played by Aishwarya Rajesh, and she adds to the seriousness of the religious sequences. Other actors who contribute to the movie include Meenakshi Goswami, Malvika Nair, Vennela Kishore and Rajeev Kanakala.

Music and Visual Appeal

The film works best visually when it enters its mythological and spiritual world. The devotional atmosphere gives the movie a distinct identity and separates it from a routine thriller.

Anup Rubens’ music supports the devotional sequences and adds to the spiritual mood without becoming too distracting. However, the visual and atmospheric elements are stronger than the screenplay itself.
