Wild Horse Nine Story Overview
Set in the months before the 1973 coup that overthrew Chile's democratically elected president Salvador Allende, the film follows veteran CIA operatives Chris Carlisle and Lee Chesterfield. The two colleagues travel from Santiago to Easter Island as political tensions continue to build around them.
Chris, played by John Malkovich, is a complicated man carrying decades of questionable decisions and unresolved guilt. His colleague Lee, played by Sam Rockwell, is a comparatively understated figure whose relationship with Chris goes beyond their professional responsibilities. Their friendship becomes the emotional centre of the story as they confront the secrets, compromises and loyalties that have shaped their lives.
Steve Buscemi plays MJ, the bureau chief who represents the institutional forces behind American interventions. Meanwhile, Mariana di Girolamo appears as Monica, a rebellious student whose growing connection with Chris introduces another perspective into his personal journey.
#WildHorseNine is McDonagh’s best film. Flawless screenplay - to the brim w comedy, intrigue, nostalgia and most of all heart. Malkovich/Rockwell in the running for the on-screen duo of the decade so far. This movie is a damn gem. https://t.co/Mn4qr1AqvD

Wild Horse Nine Review: A Political Thriller With a Personal Core
Martin McDonagh brings together political history, dark comedy and emotional drama in a story that looks beyond the mechanics of international interference. The Chilean coup provides the historical background, but the film's central interest lies in the people connected to that history and the moral questions they must confront.
The narrative examines how individuals justify questionable actions in the name of duty, loyalty or national interest. Rather than presenting its characters through simple moral categories, it explores the grey areas between responsibility and complicity. This approach gives the story a more personal dimension, particularly through Chris's struggle with his past.

John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell's Performances
John Malkovich plays Chris Carlisle, a veteran operative dealing with conscience, guilt and the consequences of his career. The character is described as funny and occasionally childish, but his history also makes him dangerous. This contrast gives Malkovich an opportunity to balance dark humour with moments of vulnerability and regret.
Sam Rockwell plays Lee Chesterfield, Chris's long-time colleague and closest friend. Lee is somewhat depressed and feels overdue for professional recognition, but his relationship with Chris gives him a deeper emotional role. The dynamic between the two actors is central to the film, with their friendship providing its human foundation.
Martin McDonagh has done it once again!! #WildHorseNine is an amalgamation of elements from McDonagh’s previous works put together to create an incredibly layered pseudo-spy thriller. I’m extremely grateful that the trailers hid the ball on what this story was truly about. John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell have the best on-screen chemistry you will see this year. Both bounce off each other effortlessly, and I could’ve watched a four-hour film of those two just bantering. I strongly believe this is Malkovich’s Oscar to lose. An extremely poignant performance that has not left my mind since I walked out of the theater. As with every McDonagh movie, the dark comedy is ever-present, but here it takes more of a back seat to a more introspective story. One that explores the beauty and ugliness of life through the choices we make and the relationships we choose to keep close or push away. If you’ve never seen a McDonagh film, this feels like the perfect place to start. One of the best films of 2026. 90/100

Steve Buscemi and the Supporting Cast
Steve Buscemi plays MJ, the head of the bureau whose character reflects the institutional mindset behind political interventions. His belief that his actions serve the interests of his country introduces another layer of moral conflict into the story.
Mariana di Girolamo plays Monica, a rebellious student who develops a connection with Chris. Her character provides a counterbalance to the world of intelligence operations and political compromises. The supporting cast helps expand the film's perspective beyond the two central characters.
Martin McDonagh's Direction and Political Themes
McDonagh uses the political backdrop of 1973 Chile to explore questions about American involvement in international conflicts. His interest in the subject goes back to his teenage years, when a song by The Clash encouraged him to read about American interventions around the world.
However, the film is not presented simply as a historical account. Its deeper focus is on guilt, loyalty, spirituality and the emotional consequences of decisions made over several decades. The director's familiar combination of uncomfortable humour and human vulnerability gives the political subject matter a distinctive dramatic approach.

Easter Island: A Setting With Its Own Identity
Filmed on Easter Island, also known locally as Rapa Nui, the movie uses one of the world's most remote locations as more than just a visual backdrop. The island's ancient Moai statues and roaming wild horses contribute to its distinctive atmosphere.
The setting also connects with the film's themes of mortality and judgement. Its spiritual atmosphere provides an interesting contrast to the political world inhabited by Chris and Lee. The island becomes a place where the characters are forced to reflect on their lives and the decisions they have made.
