Mutiny Movie Review: Jason Statham Leads A Thriller That Falls Short

"Mutiny" is a thrilling film with Jason Statham at the helm. This is another movie with a plot revolving around betrayal, conspiracy, and a struggle for survival, putting Statham in his element with an equally tough character in a dangerous predicament. There is sufficient promise in this premise to make it an entertaining action thriller; however, the delivery falls short of Statham's charisma. The action scenes have moments, but as a thriller, "Mutiny" is somewhat less successful.

In the plot of the movie, Cole Reed (Jason Statham), an ex-soldier, is put in danger due to his involvement in a conspiracy that includes powerful individuals and acts of betrayal. A personal dispute transforms into something much larger as Cole tries to find out the truth and survive at the same time. Having enemies on all sides, Cole has to use his combat skills and instincts in order to succeed.

The conspiracy adds themes of loyalty, revenge, and mistrust to the plot as Cole tries to discover the culprits of what happened around him. All the remaining part of the movie is devoted to Cole's struggle against the conspiracy and people who try to stop him.

Mutiny Review: Familiar Action Without Enough Thrills

Mutiny has one major benefit in terms of casting. Jason Statham knows exactly how to portray a character like that. Also, there is a rather simple premise of the movie that would have been perfect for a thriller. Indeed, there is enough betrayal and mystery here to create some intrigue, especially when the main character starts finding out what the conspiracy is really about.

Nevertheless, the screenplay fails to create any suspense all the way through. The thriller parts do not have enough tension in order to make twists thrilling, and sometimes they come off as predictable. Instead of making the situation more intense, the plot becomes quite conventional. That's where Mutiny fails a bit. While Statham is still engaging, other elements of the movie do not provide him with the same opportunities.

Jason Statham Keeps The Action Alive

Clearly, Jason Statham is the star who makes this movie appealing for the audience. His acting is quite restrained but works well in the scenes where he acts physically. Statham delivers the same cool hero character that the viewers know from his action movies.

Annabelle Wallis serves as good support for Statham. Moreover, there are also several other actors, such as Jason Wong, Alex Pettyfer and Paddy Considine. The supporting cast is adequate, though, there are some limitations in the screenwriting when it comes to characters' personalities. However, any scene featuring Jason Statham and action immediately improves the movie.

Action And Visual Appeal

These actions scenes have enough physicality to satisfy the fanatics of Statham. The movie makes use of more of real combat and chases rather than excessive action that suits the acting style of the lead star. Cinematography provides a good look for the movie, and the background music adds to the intensity of the action. The editing ensures there is enough action going on, but some transitions from the thriller to the action portion of the movie could have been better. There is nothing unique about the technical presentation in the movie.
