Kalki Koechlin is bringing a more artistic perspective to festive fashion with Max Fashion’s latest collection for 2026. The actor has stepped into the role of curator for the debut edition of MAX PROJECT NEW, a purpose-led initiative that brings original artwork, traditional craftsmanship and contemporary clothing together. Rather than treating art simply as inspiration, the collection places original paintings directly onto fashion pieces while also celebrating the centuries-old craft of hand block printing from Sanganer, Rajasthan.

Kalki Koechlin Curates Max Project New

MAX PROJECT NEW marks Max Fashion’s attempt to take creativity beyond the conventional design studio and bring different artistic voices into everyday fashion. For its first edition, Koechlin worked with the brand’s design team to curate pieces that connect contemporary festive dressing with individual stories and traditional craft.

The collection combines fluid silhouettes and unexpected pairings, allowing the pieces to work not only for festive occasions but also as part of everyday wardrobes. Koechlin’s role as curator adds another creative layer to the project, with the collection built around the idea that what people wear can carry a story.

The campaign captures the concept through the line, “HOW NEW IS YOUR NEW.”

Original Artwork By Specially-Abled Artists Takes Centre Stage

One of the collection’s key collaborations is with the Kairassi Foundation in Chennai, a design-inclusive organisation that works with specially-abled artists. Max Fashion collaborated with three artists — Simron, Pavithra and Manas — to bring their original paintings from canvas onto garments and accessories.

Simron’s watercolour landscapes appear on skirts, adding a dreamlike quality to the pieces. Pavithra’s ocean-inspired blue artwork has been translated onto shirts, while Manas’s distinctive artwork, created using a straw rather than a traditional brush, features on a tote bag.

The brand has emphasised that these pieces are not reinterpretations of the artist's work. Their original paintings have been transferred directly into the fashion collection, keeping the artists’ individual creative expressions at the heart of the designs.

Sanganer Craft Meets Contemporary Festive Dressing

The second major element of the collection comes from Sanganer, Rajasthan, where Max Fashion worked with local artisans to develop an exclusive hand-block print. The design combines Japanese floral motifs with the region’s traditional printing techniques. The process involved hand-carving wooden blocks, preparing colours and printing each layer onto the fabric one shade at a time.

This brings the craftsmanship of Sanganer into a contemporary festive wardrobe while retaining the handmade nature of the technique. The collection therefore brings together two very different creative processes — original paintings by contemporary artists and traditional hand-carved block printing — while using fashion as the medium connecting them.

Kalki Koechlin’s Vision For Meaningful Fashion

For Koechlin, the collection is about making festive fashion feel more personal than simply following seasonal trends. She has described the project as an opportunity to make clothing carry another person’s story, whether through an artwork or a hand-crafted print. Max Fashion CEO Sumit Chandna similarly described fashion as a form of expression and storytelling, with MAX PROJECT NEW designed to bring artists’ and artisans’ work directly into what consumers wear.

The initiative is also planned to continue beyond its debut collection, with Max Fashion indicating that future seasons will bring in new artists, craftspeople and creative voices. The Festive 2026 line thus serves as the starting point for a wider platform connecting fashion with art, craft and creative expression.

Final Take

Kalki Koechlin’s collaboration with Max Fashion puts original artwork and traditional Sanganer craftsmanship at the centre of its Festive 2026 collection. Through MAX PROJECT NEW, the brand is combining contemporary silhouettes with stories created by artists and artisans, giving the festive wardrobe a distinctly creative direction.
