'Love Lottery' Review: Does Akshay Oberoi Make the Mystery Worth Watching?

Love Lottery is a Hindi romantic thriller directed by Arvind Pandey and starring Akshay Oberoi, Heli Daruwala, Kabir Duhan Singh and Hemant Pandey. The film follows Kartik Saxena, a successful man in his mid-thirties who gets married after falling for Bharani Verma.

What begins as a romantic relationship soon turns disturbing when Kartik finds himself caught in a murder investigation. The film combines marital conflict, courtroom drama and a murder mystery, with its first half creating decent suspense before the story becomes less effective in the second half.

Kartik Saxena (Akshay Oberoi) is a successful man in his mid-thirties who is ready for marriage as per his family’s wish. After meeting Bharani Verma (Heli Daruwala), he comes to realize that she would be the perfect choice for a wife. Nevertheless, his friend Vijay (Vijayant Kohli) is a sceptic of marriage who advises Kartik to be very cautious.

The young man does not heed his advice and marries Bharani. This seemingly happy marriage turns out to be far from happy as problems arise in their marriage. Everything gets much worse when Bharani dies and becomes a murder victim.

As a consequence, Kartik becomes the prime suspect in the murder case. Now, he has to face the police, the court, and the problems arising in his marriage. The whole film is about how the investigation and the trial take an unexpected course due to secrets, contradictions, and new facts.

Love Lottery Review: Did First Half Loses Some Tension?

What makes Love Lottery an outstanding film is its premise. There is enough time spent setting up Kartik and Bharani as a couple before making their marriage a subject of suspicion. As a result, the audience is able to grasp the situation Kartik finds himself in before the murder mystery begins. The first half provides for the introduction of new facts at the right moment.

It looks like the plot goes in one direction, but soon a new fact emerges making the characters look from the new angle. Thus, the first part has quite a good atmosphere of mystery. Akshay Oberoi is certainly the best asset of the movie. He manages to make the portrayal of Kartik's confusion, desperation and vulnerability believable and convincing.

The second best actress of the movie is Heli Daruwala who does not reveal Bharani completely and makes her intentions questionable for the audience. Unfortunately, the tension created in the first half of the movie is somewhat lost in the second one. With the increasing number of courtroom scenes and proceeding of the trial itself, the story starts getting predictable.

Did Akshay Oberoi Leads a Strong Performance?

Much of the Love Lottery falls upon the shoulders of Akshay Oberoi himself. The reason why his characterisation of Kartik succeeds is that it is not overplayed. The fear and uncertainty start to show as he becomes increasingly ensnared in an unwanted lawsuit through his private affairs. The element of mystery surrounding Bharani is supplied by Heli Daruwala’s characterisation of her.

Bharani manages to remain enigmatic for most of the movie, thus aiding the murder investigation process. Vijayant Kohli plays the role of Vijay, Kartik’s bachelor friend, in order to inject some comic element in the movie. Vijay has very opinionated views about marriage and women, which provides some light moments despite him being part of the problem within the film itself in that some of his views are generalized.

How Are The Social Theme and Technical Aspects Of The Film?

Love Lottery tries to address the theme of manipulation, troubled marriages and men being victims of harassment and abuse in their relationship. The topic adds another dimension to the detective story besides the main plot. Nevertheless, the treatment of the topic of gender issues in the movie is rather inconsistent. Sometimes, there are generalizations regarding women and marriage rather than the viewpoints of particular characters.

As a result, the social statement is not as sophisticated as it could have been due to the main concept of the movie. The thriller genre fits the first half of the movie better whereas the second part consists mainly of the courtroom action, which slows down the pace of the film.

Akshay Oberoi's restrained performance and Heli Daruwala's ambiguity also help the film maintain interest.

However, the second half is not as effective as the first. The courtroom portions lose some of the suspense, while convenient developments and broad gender commentary prevent the film from becoming a more layered examination of its subject.
