Bethlehem Kudumba Unit Review: Nivin Pauly And Mamitha Shine In A Sweet Rom-Com

"Premalu" director Girish AD makes his return with "Bethlehem Kudumba Unit", which is a romantic comedy movie in Malayalam language. This movie stars Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju as the lead pair along with Sangeeth Prathap, Shyam Mohan, Vinay Fort, Srindaa and Bindu Panicker in supporting roles. It released in theatres on August 21. The plot of the movie deals with a single and older man named Justin and a college-going girl Ashley who stays near him. The movie is about their love affair and the plot takes a light-hearted and mature approach to their age difference romance. Though there is nothing new in the screenplay that we have come to expect from Girish AD's movies, the performances and humor make the movie worth watching.

Justin (Nivin Pauly) is an unmarried individual who lives in Bethlehem. He is somewhat in a rut while also searching for himself in the world. Ashley (Mamitha Baiju) is a college student living nearby. Over time, their lives start becoming entwined and the neighbourhood equation starts becoming something else.

The age disparity of the characters is easily enough to be the biggest flaw in the movie. However, in this case, the movie gives both the characters their adulthood status and leaves their relationship unencumbered by unnecessary humour about their ages.

Furthermore, the whole relationship stays a secret resulting in misunderstandings, awkward moments and many laughs. The preview of the movie itself has alluded to Justin telling Ashley to act as though she is a stranger in front of others. The other half of the movie is dedicated to their attempts to deal with each other.

One of the most significant advantages of Bethlehem Kudumba Unit is the simplicity of the movie. It does not attempt to turn the romance of the characters into something too dramatic. On the contrary, it gives them an opportunity to get acquainted and allows the story to unfold smoothly.

The issue of the age gap between the characters is also presented with unusual maturity. The screenplay does not make a fool out of it and tries to avoid pushing the audience to think about the story in a certain way. This is why the romance looks quite pleasant.

The main drawback of the story is the lack of major twists or plot revelations. The screenplay itself goes quite smoothly and at some points, the movie seems to wait for the next funny or romantic scene. The previous works of Girish AD serve as a high example here. Bethlehem Kudumba Unit possesses all the charm but lacks the necessary freshness.

Nivin Pauly And Mamitha Baiju Shine

Nivin Pauly seems quite appropriate for the role of Justin. This subtle performance is well-suited since this character is not described as a dramatic romantic figure. Expressions and timing help him create a warm image of the character. Mamitha Baiju looks very effective as Ashley. She creates an energetic image of the character and manages to make her seem quite different from other characters of the romantic comedy genre. The chemistry between Mamitha Baiju and Nivin Pauly becomes one of the film's advantages. Sangeeth Prathap, Shyam Mohan, Vinay Forrt, Srindaa and Bindu Panicker look good as supporting actors.

Music And Visual Appeal

Technical Department is among the highlights of the film. With Ajmal Sabu handling the photography, he brings life to the story. Similarly, Vishnu Vijay provides background score that complements the film's romantic and youthful theme. Editing is by Aakash Joseph Varghese, thus assisting in maintaining the relaxed pace of the film. Many technicians of this film have worked on Premalu, such as Ajmal Sabu, Vishnu Vijay and Aakash Joseph Varghese. Visually, the film doesn't strive to be fancy. Instead, it supports the film's cast and settings.

In spite of the age difference of the two characters, the movie could have turned out to be a forced or gimmickry-laden film. The screenplay is the downside to this movie. There are no sufficient plot twists in the movie. Nevertheless, the movie is worth watching thanks to the chemistry between the lead actors Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju.
