Karan Johar’s popular Student of the Year franchise could be making a comeback, but this time with a major change in format. According to recent reports, the much-awaited third installment may not be released as a theatrical film and could instead be developed as a web series.
The upcoming project is reportedly expected to feature Bollywood actress Shanaya Kapoor in a prominent role. If the reports are accurate, the third chapter could also take the franchise in a significantly darker and bolder direction compared with its previous installments.
Student of the Year 3 May Get a Darker Web Series Treatment
According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, the makers are considering transforming Student of the Year 3 from a movie into a digital series. Unlike the earlier films, the new version is reportedly expected to explore a darker and more mature tone.
Shanaya Kapoor is said to be among the leading contenders for the main role. There are also reports suggesting that the actress could potentially portray dual characters in the series, although no official confirmation has been made so far.

The project is reportedly being envisioned with a “Class meets Euphoria” style of treatment, indicating that the makers could introduce a more intense and contemporary take on the world of young characters, relationships and college life.
However, it is important to note that the makers have not officially announced the cast, storyline or format of Student of the Year 3 yet.

How the Student of the Year Franchise Began
The Student of the Year franchise began in 2012 with Karan Johar as the producer. The first film introduced Sidharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt to audiences in prominent roles.

The movie revolved around three students competing against each other while dealing with friendship, romance, ambition and rivalry. It went on to become a commercial success and helped establish its young cast in Bollywood.
The franchise returned in 2019 with Student of the Year 2, featuring Tiger Shroff, Tara Sutaria and Ananya Panday. Although the sequel generated considerable attention, it did not achieve the same level of commercial success as the original film.

Why Student of the Year 3 Could Move to OTT
The reported shift from the big screen to the OTT format could give the makers more freedom to experiment with the franchise.
Instead of following the relatively light-hearted college drama formula of the earlier films, the third installment is expected to explore a more mature atmosphere. A streaming series could also allow the story to develop its characters and conflicts over multiple episodes.
The reported darker approach could therefore mark a fresh beginning for the franchise rather than simply continuing the formula established by the first two movies.

Will Student of the Year 3 Stream on JioHotstar?
When it comes to the potential OTT platform, JioHotstar is reportedly being considered as the leading destination for Student of the Year 3.
According to reports, the project could be released as an exclusive web series on the platform if the plans move forward. However, neither the streaming platform nor the makers have officially confirmed the release details at this stage.
For now, fans will have to wait for an official announcement regarding the cast, production, release platform and launch date of Student of the Year 3.
