Verity is an English psychological thriller directed by Michael Showalter and based on Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel. The film stars Dakota Johnson, Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett in the lead roles. It follows a struggling writer who is hired to complete the unfinished work of a bestselling novelist but discovers a disturbing manuscript that changes everything she believes about the family.
The film releases in theatres on October 2, 2026. The setup has everything needed for an intense mystery, a secluded house, a bestselling author who cannot communicate, a suspicious husband and a manuscript filled with disturbing secrets. But while the film creates an attractive thriller atmosphere, its screenplay often relies more on twists and explanations than genuine suspense.

Verity Story Overview
Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson) is a struggling writer whose career has not taken off. Her situation changes when she gets an unusual opportunity to ghostwrite the unfinished books of bestselling author Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway). Verity has been left unable to speak or move properly after a serious car accident. Lowen moves into the Crawford family home so she can study Verity’s notes and writing material. There she meets Verity’s husband Jeremy (Josh Hartnett) and their son Crew.
While going through Verity’s files, Lowen discovers a private manuscript that appears to reveal disturbing secrets about Verity’s marriage, her children and the events surrounding the death of one of them. The manuscript makes Lowen question whether Verity is actually as helpless as she appears. The rest of the story focuses on Lowen’s attempt to understand what really happened while her growing attraction to Jeremy makes the situation even more complicated.
#VerityFilm is an impulsive, offensive piece of art (if it can even be called that). I’ve never read a Coleen Hoover book, but these film adaptations warn me to stay far away.

Verity Review: A Promising Mystery That Becomes Too Predictable
‘Verity’ has a strong central idea. The film keeps asking whether the manuscript Lowen discovers is a genuine confession or another piece of fiction designed to manipulate whoever reads it. That uncertainty gives the first half an effective sense of mystery. However, the film gradually becomes more interested in delivering twists than developing the psychological tension around them.
The reported review describes the performances as struggling to overcome a mystery that ultimately feels too flimsy, while other reviews have similarly pointed to the screenplay’s tendency to become increasingly implausible. The film also wants to be an erotic thriller, domestic mystery and psychological drama at the same time. Some of these elements work individually, but the combination does not always feel balanced.

Dakota Johnson and Anne Hathaway’s Performances
Dakota Johnson gives Lowen an appropriately uncertain quality. She is curious and impulsive, but her attraction to Jeremy makes her decisions increasingly questionable. Johnson does not play her as a simple victim, which gives the character some complexity. Anne Hathaway is arguably the most memorable part of the film. She embraces the melodramatic side of Verity while maintaining enough ambiguity to keep the character unsettling.
Even when Verity cannot communicate physically, Hathaway's performance gives the character a strong presence. Josh Hartnett plays Jeremy as a grieving husband whose intentions remain difficult to read. His performance works best when the film allows the audience to question whether he is genuinely vulnerable or hiding something darker.
Story and Screenplay
The screenplay by Nick Antosca stays close to the central mystery of the novel but struggles to make every development convincing on screen. The manuscript is an effective storytelling device because it allows the audience to experience Verity’s version of events while simultaneously questioning whether it can be trusted. The problem is that the film eventually explains too much.
Instead of allowing uncertainty to build naturally, several revelations are delivered in ways that make the plot feel increasingly complicated rather than genuinely suspenseful. The story also raises interesting questions about authorship, marriage, grief and who gets to control a narrative. But as India Today noted, the film is better at raising these questions than fully exploring them.

Verity para quem leu o livro de Colleen Hoover
Eu li Verity em 2024 e, uma semana antes de assistir ao filme, resolvi reler o livro. Queria ter tudo fresco na cabeça para conseguir ser justa aqui.

Suspense, Climax and Emotional Impact
The secluded Crawford house gives the film an ideal setting for psychological suspense. Lowen is surrounded by things she does not understand, while Verity’s presence creates constant uncertainty. The mystery remains engaging for portions of the film, but the suspense weakens when the plot starts depending on increasingly unlikely developments.
The reported review similarly argues that the film’s central mystery does not fully land despite its star cast. The climax attempts to deliver the final answers while leaving room for another interpretation. It fits the film’s interest in unreliable storytelling, although the emotional impact is reduced by how much the screenplay has already explained.
Music, Cinematography and Technical Aspects
The film has a polished visual style that suits its wealthy, isolated setting. The Crawford home becomes an important part of the atmosphere, looking luxurious during the day and increasingly sinister at night.
Jim Frohna handles the cinematography, while Volker Bertelmann provides the music. The score frequently signals that something disturbing is about to happen, helping maintain the thriller atmosphere. The technical presentation is strong, but the stylish look sometimes feels more effective than the screenplay itself.
What Are the Weak Points?

- Predictable developments

- Overcomplicated mystery

Final Verdict
‘Verity’ has a fascinating setup and a cast capable of making even its weaker material watchable. Dakota Johnson brings uncertainty to Lowen, while Anne Hathaway clearly understands the heightened nature of Verity and gives the film its most interesting performance.
The problem is that the screenplay does not trust its strongest idea enough. A mystery about competing versions of the truth could have been far more psychologically gripping, but the film repeatedly falls back on familiar twists and increasingly unlikely developments. Still, the performances and glossy atmosphere make it an entertaining enough one-time watch.
