The East Palace Review: Atmosphere and Horror Work Brilliantly
One of the strengths of the East Palace is that the creators understand the significance of atmosphere. Starting from the very first episode, the whole series is full of creepy atmosphere, supernatural beings and an overall feeling of imminent danger hanging over the characters' heads. The plot of the series slowly unravels itself, revealing the secrets bit by bit. Horror, fantasy and palace intrigue ensure that the viewers remain engaged and interested throughout the series. There are many good plot twists and the emotional level becomes higher and higher.
Despite the fact that there are some weaknesses, the series remains interesting and engaging. For example, some visual effects do not seem as credible as others. Also, sometimes the balance between the comic and the horror elements does not appear ideal. Nevertheless, the good mystery plot and worldbuilding compensate for those drawbacks.
Nam Joo-hyuk and Roh Yoon-seo Deliver Strong Performances
The charisma and intensity with which Nam Joo-hyuk plays the role of Gu-cheon make him a very interesting and attractive hero with emotional vulnerability and supernatural power. Nam Joo-hyuk copes both with the scenes of action and emotions perfectly. Roh Yoon-seo performs the part of Saeng-gang no less brilliantly. The charm, boldness and emotional range she gives to the character create a wonderful combination that turns out to be one of the strongest features of the series.
Netflix's "The East Palace" is simply one of the most visually-stunning Korean dramas this 2026: otherwordly, ethereal, and eerie with a solid plot and a talented cast.
