Disney is making yet another attempt at recreating one of its best-loved animated classics by bringing back Moana in a live-action adaptation. This time the movie is helmed by director Thomas Kail. With Catherine Laga‘aia playing the role of Moana, and Dwayne Johnson reprising the fan favorite character Maui, the movie retains almost everything about the 2016 animated blockbuster. The live-action version of Moana is successful in doing justice to the adventurous life of Moana and brings to life stunning visuals and heartwarming music and themes of courage and self-realization. Yet, there is nothing new to it that can make this version worthwhile.

Moana Story Overview
In the story, Moana (Catherine Laga'aia) is the brave daughter of a Polynesian village chief whose passion for exploring the ocean despite generations of cautioning against venturing past the reef propels her into setting sail to save her island from a creeping darkness by restoring the stolen heart of Te Fiti. On her journey, she meets and partners with Maui (Dwayne Johnson), an adventurous demigod who together with Moana learns many things about courage, responsibility and identity in overcoming challenges including mythical creatures and strong winds. The rest of the story revolves around Moana's quest to accept her fate and discover herself.

Moana Review: Familiar Adventure, Fresh Visual Splendour
The Moana live action adaptation is quite similar to the original animated film. The screenplay includes numerous memorable scenes from the movie, thus letting the viewers enjoy them in real-life visuals with modern effects. The biggest advantage of the film is the way it was presented. All the ocean scenes, island landscapes and fantastical creatures have been portrayed amazingly well. Nevertheless, since the plot is based on the original, the movie never surprises the audience. In spite of the predictable storyline, the film is entertaining due to the optimistic mood, funny moments and the eternal lesson of believing in yourself.
Catherine Laga‘aia and Dwayne Johnson Make a Winning Pair
Catherine Laga‘aia portrays Moana confidently by embodying the character’s bravery, compassion, and sense of adventure. She puts her own spin on the role without ignoring all that made the cartoon version so special. Dwayne Johnson adds charm and wit to the role of Maui. He is a big draw as always and his movie star status guarantees this is one of the most appealing characters in the film. Together, the two lead actors make for an entertaining ride throughout the whole movie.
