Alejandro G. Iñárritu has opened up about assembling the star-studded cast of Digger, describing the film's ensemble as one of the greatest gifts of the project. Led by Tom Cruise, the movie brings together Riz Ahmed, Jesse Plemons, Sandra Hüller, John Goodman and several other acclaimed performers.
Ahead of the film's theatrical release, Iñárritu explained that building the right ensemble involved much more than simply choosing famous or technically accomplished actors. For him, emotional range, physical presence and the connection between an actor and their character were equally important.
Iñárritu Calls Digger Cast A Dream Ensemble
Iñárritu described working with Cruise, Ahmed, Plemons, Hüller, Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Sophie Wilde and Emma D'Arcy as a dream. The filmmaker said the performers bring more than acting ability to the production, pointing to their individual humour, intelligence and openness. He believes those qualities add depth to the characters and help create the unpredictable chemistry required by the story. Iñárritu also described casting as one of a director's most important decisions. In his view, finding the right performer is ultimately about discovering a mysterious fit between the person and the character.

Tom Cruise Leads The Digger Ensemble
Tom Cruise headlines Digger as the title character, Digger Rockwell, a powerful oil tycoon whose actions contribute to an unfolding environmental crisis. The role represents another major departure from Cruise's familiar action-driven screen image.
Riz Ahmed stars alongside him as Dr. Nirav Ganesh, an environmental scientist and technical adviser. Jesse Plemons, Sandra Hüller, John Goodman and Michael Stuhlbarg also play key roles in the ensemble. The cast additionally features Robert John Burke, Emma D'Arcy, Burn Gorman and Sophie Wilde, giving the film a broad mix of established and younger performers.

Iñárritu Reunites With Key Creative Collaborators
The ensemble in front of the camera is matched by an experienced creative team behind it. Iñárritu worked again with cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, continuing their previous collaborations on visually ambitious films. Stephen Mirrione and Conor O'Neill serve as editors, while Dennis Gassner and Richard Johnson handle production design.
Jacqueline West oversees costumes, with Alessandro Bertolazzi responsible for makeup and hair and Kazu Hiro working on prosthetic makeup. The screenplay was written by Iñárritu with Alexander Dinelaris, Nicolás Giacobone and Sabina Berman, from a story by Iñárritu and Berman, with Jez Butterworth also involved in the writing team.

Digger Brings Tom Cruise And Iñárritu Together
The project marks Iñárritu's latest original feature and his collaboration with Cruise as both actor and producer. The director has described the film as an ambitious project built around an unusual central character and a large ensemble. Digger follows a powerful man attempting to prove he can save humanity after a disaster linked to his own actions.
The story combines dark humour, environmental themes and social commentary while placing Cruise's character at the centre of the crisis. The film was shot entirely in VistaVision and is scheduled to release in cinemas and IMAX in India on October 2, 2026. Warner Bros. Pictures is distributing the film.
Final Take
Alejandro G. Iñárritu says finding the right performers was central to shaping Digger, with Tom Cruise leading an ensemble that includes Riz Ahmed, Jesse Plemons, Sandra Hüller, John Goodman and more. The filmmaker sees the cast's emotional range, physicality and character fit as key elements behind the film.
